Echocardiogram assessments

Types of echocardiogram assessments

An echocardiogram is a specialist ultrasound scan of the heart. It can assess the heart chambers, valves, pumping function and blood flow, helping clinicians investigate symptoms and monitor known heart conditions.

Transthoracic echocardiogram icon

Transthoracic Echocardiogram

The most common type of echocardiogram, performed with an ultrasound probe moved across the chest.

Heart valve assessment icon

Heart Valve Assessment

Assesses how the heart valves open, close and allow blood to move through the heart.

Cardiac function assessment icon

Cardiac Function

Evaluates how strongly the heart muscle pumps and how well the heart chambers are working.

Blood flow assessment icon

Blood Flow Assessment

Uses ultrasound and Doppler measurements to assess blood flow through the heart and nearby vessels.

Heart symptoms assessment icon

Symptoms Assessment

May be recommended for symptoms such as breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, chest discomfort or swelling.

About echocardiograms

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram, often called an echo, is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create moving images of the heart and nearby blood vessels.

The scan can show how well the heart is pumping, how the valves are working and whether there are structural changes that need further review.

Safety

Is an echocardiogram safe?

Yes. A standard transthoracic echocardiogram is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation. It uses ultrasound waves and is generally considered safe.

You may feel light pressure from the probe on the chest, but the test should not be painful and you can usually return to normal activities afterwards.

Clinical value

What an echocardiogram can tell you

An echocardiogram can provide detailed information about heart structure and function, helping clinicians investigate symptoms and monitor known cardiac conditions.

  • How strongly the heart is pumping
  • Heart chamber size and wall thickness
  • Heart valve structure and function
  • Blood flow through the heart
  • Possible causes of breathlessness, palpitations or chest symptoms
  • Monitoring of known heart valve disease, heart failure or cardiomyopathy

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Clear answers to common questions about private echocardiograms, preparation, appointments and results.

What is an echocardiogram used for?

An echocardiogram is used to assess how your heart is working, investigate symptoms and diagnose or monitor heart conditions. It can show the heart valves, heart chambers, heart muscle and nearby blood vessels.

What is an echocardiogram and how does it work?

An echocardiogram is a heart ultrasound. A probe called a transducer is moved across the skin of your chest. Sound waves bounce off the heart structures and are converted into moving images on a screen.

What is the difference between an echo and an ECG?

An echocardiogram creates images of the heart’s structure and movement. An ECG records the electrical activity and rhythm of the heart as a graph. They are different tests and may be used for different clinical questions.

How do I prepare for an echocardiogram test?

Preparation is usually minimal. For a standard transthoracic echocardiogram, you may be asked to undress on your top half and lie on a couch while the probe is moved over the skin of your chest.

How long does an echocardiogram take?

The procedure usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. It should not cause significant discomfort, and you can usually return to your normal day afterwards.

Why would a doctor order an echocardiogram?

A doctor may recommend an echocardiogram to investigate symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, high blood pressure, breathlessness or an irregular heartbeat. It can also help monitor known heart valve disease or other heart conditions.

What does an echocardiogram show?

An echocardiogram can show the structure of the heart and nearby blood vessels, how blood flows through the heart, valve function, heart wall thickness, pumping strength and signs of conditions such as heart failure, valve disease or cardiomyopathy.
