About mammograms

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a specialist breast X-Ray used to create detailed images of breast tissue. It can help identify changes that may not be felt during examination.

Mammograms are commonly used for breast screening and to investigate symptoms, depending on your age, clinical history and the reason for imaging.

Safety

Is a mammogram safe?

Mammograms use low-dose X-Rays. The radiation exposure is carefully controlled and the test is only recommended where the clinical benefits outweigh the risks.

You should tell the clinical team if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are breastfeeding, so the most appropriate imaging pathway can be considered.

Clinical value

What a mammogram can tell you

A mammogram can help detect and assess breast changes, including changes that may require additional imaging or specialist review.

  • Early breast changes that may not be felt
  • Breast lumps or areas of concern
  • Calcifications within breast tissue
  • Changes in breast density or structure
  • Comparison with previous mammograms where available
  • Whether further breast imaging or specialist assessment is needed

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Clear answers to common questions about private mammograms, preparation, appointments and results.

At what age should you have a mammogram in the UK?

Private breast screening in the UK is commonly available from the age of 40. If you notice breast symptoms such as a lump, nipple change, skin change or persistent pain, you should seek medical advice promptly rather than waiting for routine screening.

How often should you have a mammogram in the UK?

Private breast screening is usually limited to once every 12 months because mammograms use X-Rays. The right interval depends on your clinical circumstances, symptoms and any specialist advice you have received.

Do mammograms hurt?

Mammograms are non-invasive and many people do not find them painful, although the breast needs to be compressed for a short time to obtain clear images. Some people find this uncomfortable, but the scan is usually quick and discomfort normally settles shortly afterwards.

How long do mammogram results take?

After your mammogram, the images are reviewed by specialist radiologists and a written report is prepared. Timing can vary by scanning centre, but your results will be shared with our clinical team so they can support you with next steps.

What does it mean if I get recalled after a mammogram?

Being recalled does not necessarily mean cancer has been found. You may be asked to attend further assessment if the first images were not clear enough or if an area needs closer review. Further tests may include additional mammogram views, ultrasound or specialist breast assessment.
